Attorney Cairns Speaks on Navigating the Medicare Secondary Payer Maze

CONCORD, NH — R. Matthew Cairns, litigation attorney with Gallagher, Callahan and Gartrell and 2011 president of DRI — The Voice of the Defense Bar, recently presented an update on navigating the Medicare Secondary Payer maze at the Annual Convention of the Oregon Association of Defense Counsel. Cairns explained current developments in the law including pending federal legislation and best practices for handling cases involving Medicare eligible plaintiffs. He also spoke on developing leaders within law firms and legal organizations such as DRI drawing on his own personal experiences within DRI.

Attorney Cairns represents the interests of individuals, insurers, manufacturers, transportation and other companies in diverse commercial, complex and traditional litigation matters in all state and federal courts and state agencies. Cairns serves as general counsel to several closely held businesses in New Hampshire and is also experienced in general corporate and municipal representation, and risk management training. Matt has been named a "Super Lawyer" for products liability defense for the past 3 years.

Since 1996, Cairns has been an active member, award recipient, and leader of DRI. Before becoming DRI’s president, Matt served a one-year term as DRI’s president-elect, and previously was DRI’s first vice president. Prior to that, he was the northeast regional director overseeing DRI initiatives in New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Cairns was also the DRI state representative for New Hampshire and received the organization’s State Leadership Award.
