Cairns Speaks on Medicare Liens, Tips for the Defense Practice

CONCORD, NH — R. Matthew Cairns will be a featured speaker at the Kentucky Defense Counsel’s 2009 Fall Seminar on October 2, 2009. Attorney Cairns will address existing Medicare laws, regulations and rules, and contingent liabilities, and how defense counsel and clients need to adapt to the new environment. Cairns will also speak about recent efforts to reform the Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) Statute, legislative resolutions, the possibility of changing the MSP statute through litigation, and resources for MSP-regulated entities.

Cairns is a shareholder-director at Gallagher, Callahan & Gartrell and represents the interests of individuals, insurers, manufacturers, transportation and other companies in diverse commercial, complex and traditional litigation matters before state and federal courts and state agencies. Cairns has been named a 2007 and 2008 "Super Lawyer" for products liability defense. Since 1996, Matt has been an active member, award recipient, and leader of DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar, the largest international organization of attorneys committed to defending the interests of businesses and individuals in civil litigation. He currently serves as first vice president and member of the board of directors. He will become president of DRI in 2010. Cairns recently moderated two national webcasts on the same Medicare issues.
