Cairns Speaks on Medicare Regulation Impacts on Personal Injury Litigation

CONCORD, NH — R. Matthew Cairns was one of three featured speakers on a DRI Webcast entitled “MSP/MMSEA PART I – The Medicare Secondary Payer Statute and the Medicare, Medicaid and SCHIP Extension Act: Impact on Litigating Personal Injury Claims.” This was the first session in a three-part series and aired on August 26th.

Attorney Cairns addressed how all parties to a claim can be negatively impacted by non-compliance with existing MSP/MMSEA laws and regulations, including severe penalties and exposure for attorneys and their clients. Cairns talked about areas of exposure, settling cases, new pitfalls for litigation, and best practices in day-to-day corporate protocols, litigation, and mediation.

Cairns is a shareholder-director at Gallagher, Callahan & Gartrell and represents the interests of individuals, insurers, manufacturers, transportation and other companies in diverse commercial, complex and traditional litigation matters before state and federal courts and state agencies. Cairns has been named a 2007 and 2008 "Super Lawyer" for products liability defense, and holds the position of first vice president of DRI.
